The midfielder picked up a problem whilst on international duty, and scans have showed an injury that at the very least rules him out of the derby.
Bertolacci has not had the best of times since joining, failing woefully so far to show himself anywhere near a €20m man.
A statement today revealed further tests would be carried out next week. In the interim though, we can be pretty sure he's not taking part in Sunday's derby.
"AC Milan announces that Andrea Bertolacci underwent medical tests earlier today for a thigh injury which revealed a minor tear in the adductor muscle area. The Italian midfielder will have further tests next week." read the statement on the official acmilan site.
Maybe this is the break Montolivo has been waiting for, or Poli steps up and claims the spot. Because on the evidence we have so far Bertolacci is not much of an improvement on what we have.
If he had shown himself capable, no one would have been screaming for that additional deal on deadline day.
There's still time though, and hopefully he comes back in the right shape to give that woeful midfield the boost it needs.
